Wheaton Lion Dan Milinko introduced our speaker Jack P. Bechaud, Title IV ADA Specialist with Clear Captions. ClearCaptions is a free phone captioning service that provides near real-time call captions of phone conversations for individuals whose hearing loss inhibits their phone use.

Similar to captioned television, ClearCaptions allows for you to read real-time written call captions of what callers say on its revolutionary home phone, mobile device, or computer. This free captioning service is provided by ClearCaptions and paid through a fund administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) started by President George Bush and called the Americans with Disabilities Act. There is no cost to qualified individuals whose hearing loss inhibits their phone use.

Clear Captions is the only certified company that can furnish this program. Jack pointed out that about 30% of Americans have hearing disabilities. He has installed about 300 phones since he went to work for Clear Captions 3 years ago. All done at no charge to the user.

To qualify for ClearCaptions products and services, hearing loss must be certified by a qualified healthcare professional. ClearCaptions accepts certification of hearing loss from audiologists and other qualified healthcare professionals. A healthcare professional will be required to complete a professional certification form, certifying hearing loss and need for captioned telephone service. Requirements are: Hearing Loss, Home phone service, High-speed internet and iPhone 5s or newer,
In addition, one must self-certify that they have medically recognized hearing loss that necessitates the use of ClearCaptions phone captioning service.
