Guest Luncheon Speakers

November 6, 2018

Wheaton Lion member Steve Maney introduced our guests. Amelia Barrett, Director & Professor of Theatre at College of DuPage spoke to us about the upcoming show “A Christmas Carol” written by Charles Dickens.

Amelia introduced two of the 50 community members who are in the show this year. The two are Nathan T. Dittemore (black hat) who plays Ebenezer Scrooge and Chandler Sengstock (gray hat) who plays Fred. The two actors put on an excellent presentation which has Fred inviting Scrooge over to his house for a Christmas dinner and a chance to meet his new wife. Scrooge goes from being a grouch to finally turning into a nice person who does accept the invitation.

This will be the 15th time that the College of DuPage has presented this show. It will be held November 23, 24 and 25.

For ticket information visit their website at AtTheMAC.org. Their phone number is 630-942-4000. Tickets range from $14.00 for students and seniors to $16.00 for Adults.

Wheaton Lion member and member of the Wheaton College faculty, Tony Payne introduced our guests. Dr. Crystal L. Downing and her husband Dr. David C. Downing who are Co-Directors of the Marion E. Wade Center. Prior to them speaking we were welcomed to a wonderful luncheon at Wheaton College by their President Philip G. Ryken.

The Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College (Illinois) is a special research collection of papers, books, and manuscripts, primarily relating to seven authors from the United Kingdom: C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesterton, Dorothy L. Sayers, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield, and George MacDonald, as well as C. S. Lewis's wife, the poet Joy Davidman. The center is named after Marion E. Wade, founder of ServiceMaster Corp.

The Downings went over the history of the center and told some interesting stories about some of the authors. It is a non-profit center and they welcome all guests to come and inspect the incredible amount of books, letters and history in the Center. It is located at 351 E. Lincoln Ave. on the College grounds.
