Guest Luncheon Speakers

The guest speaker at this week's meeting was Christina Nemetz, Superintendent of Marketing and Special Events for the Wheaton Park District. The Wheaton Park District is the Lions' fantastic partner in organizing and directing the 8th Annual Lions Reindeer 5k Run. The Reindeer Run is one of the largest fundraising events of the year for the Lions Club.

Nemetz gave a presentation on the history of this event, how it has grown and improved, and covered some details for the 2019 event which will be held this Saturday, December 7th. There are currently 1,010 runners registered for the 5k run that starts downtown and navigates through the beautiful residential neighborhood to the north and east. Each runner with be presented with a finisher's medal and plenty of refreshments once the course is completed. Several Wheaton-Warrenville District 200 Schools will have runners participating in the Reindeer Run, thanks to the efforts of school PTA and Running Club groups.

The district started a partnership with the Wheaton Lions in 2002.

As for the fundraising success of the Reindeer Run, nearly $250,000 has been generated from 2012 to 2018. The Lions are confident that Saturday will yield another successful year.

Wheaton Lion Dan Milinko introduced our speaker Jennifer Plumey, Partnership Specialist, with the Chicago RCC which is part of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau.

Jennifer said that her parents were LIONS so she has always had a warm spot for our Lions Clubs, She said that the U.S. Census is taken every 10 years and the next one will be on April 1, ,2020. It is mandated by the Constitution and the object of it is to get an accurate count of residents in all of our states. People 18 years or older are asked to fill out the card questions.

The census can be done by people using their phones, or by mail. There are 10 questions in the census. Jennifer pointed out that the census is NOT affiliated with any political party. The census does not ask us for our social security information or any type of donation. Kids that are in college away from home will get cards at school that they can fill out and mail. Citizens in military groups will also get cards that they are asked to fill out and return,

The data is not shared with any government agency,

You Should Know

Wheaton Lions Club Events

Due to the Coronavirus and because of the “shelter in place” mandate, the decision has been made to CANCEL all Wheaton Lions Club events through the month of June. Once the “shelter in place” order is lifted we will reevaluate the lunch meeting schedule.


However, the Wheaton Lions Club announces that every Tuesday at noon, during the month of May and June, we will have a virtual guest speaker! See the Guest Lunch Speakers page for more info.
