Lion Ron Diener introduced our speaker Julie Yurko, the President and CEO of the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The food bank is located in Geneva, IL.

Founded in 1983 they supply food to more than 500,000 people every year. They serve people in need in 17 counties in Illinois. They work with 800 network partners including food pantries, soup kitchens, schools and 146 feeding sites. 77% of the households served have jobs. 66% have incomes at or below minimum “safe” wage levels.

Last year the Food Bank served 13.7 million meals. Food distributed by the Northern Illinois Food Bank included 33.2 million pounds of rescued food, 205,000 gallons of milk. The pantry receives 65 million pounds of donated food from food stores, farms, individuals and other sources. They also receive 50 million pounds of food from the U.S. Government.

Non “family” action includes 29 back-pack sites for 182 school kids in need weekly, 24 summer meal sites, 22 after school food sites and 3 school based pantries.

Lion RC Crompton introduced our speaker Andrea Wassel, fund raising consultant.

Andrea is a social media expert who is now rebuilding our Facebook Page section. She spoke to us about what’s involved in building a Facebook site and how it can help our Lions club grow and earn more money for our charity work.

She pointed out that we need to get our members and families involved in the site. We also need to get the Chambers of Commerce involved and let our sponsors, volunteers and people involved with our charity events know what’s “going on” with the Wheaton Lions Club.

Andrea would like to see us get 4-6 photos and brief new stories concerning the club on the site each month

Each of us should log onto the Wheaton Lions Club Facebook page and create an account.

If you have questions, Andrea’s email is awassel6@hotmail.com.
