Guest Luncheon Speakers

Wheaton Lion John Dalby introduced our speaker Sarah A. O’Donnell, the Director of Development for People’s Resource Center which is headquartered at 201 S. Naperville Rd. in Wheaton.

Sarah made a very thorough presentation concerning the mission of PRC and the various programs and services that they offer the community. She said that they like to think of their service as Neighbors to Neighbors (people in need receiving from their neighbors who can donate time and materials).

PRC started 41 years ago in Wheaton and served 150 families that first year mostly with food and clothes. This year they will serve about 30,000 families with a wide range of services. Part of what helps them do this is their relationship with a wide range of community “resources” that furnish food, education services, job placement, etc. to PRC.

Their Job Assistance program helped over 1,000 people learn job skills and end up getting employed in 2016. Typically the people looking for a job go through a 6-9 week training program. They also follow up on a regular basis with PRC after they receive a job.

Other programs include Computer Training for people with no computer skills, English as a Second Language, Art classes for all ages. Services include a very large food pantry, clothing for women, men and children, a Summer Science program for kids and other services. All are free.

PRC is always In need of volunteers and your time can be as little as 1 hour a week. They also need on-going donations of food, clothing and money. Currently they have a $180,000 Matching Grant program.

Our annual pre-Christmas luncheon was held at the Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. Over 50 members attended a wonderful lunch which was followed by an auction of some speciall items and a raffle. Each member brought a raffle item and bought raffle tickets. Many people won a raffle prize.

Our Lion Mayor Mike Gresk was the auctioneer and Lion Keith Carlson headed up the luncheon. One of the highlights was the Golden Lion Award presented to our President Rick Erickson by Zone 1-J Chairman John Barsanti. This award is given out to one person each year within the zone and Rick was honored for the wonderful job he’s done finding luncheon meeting spots for us, serving as secretary and handling many of the receipts and payments since our meeting place was flooded and is still being repaired. Rick did announce that we have a new Secretary Bobby McNeily who will begin his job after the holidays.
